Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston hosts Celebration of Woodworking on Oct. 1 – Daily Freeman

KINGSTON, N.Y. — The Hudson River Maritime Museum will host its Celebration of Woodworking on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The afternoon’s highlight will be the Kingston Boat Builders Challenge, It will feature six teams of community members and teams sponsored by local businesses racing to build an 8-foot rowing skiff. After completing the boats, the teams will race their skiffs across the Rondout Creek.

Master Bark Canoe Builder Ken Weeks will use indigenous techniques to build a birch bark canoe on site. His workshops will touch on indigenous techniques for harvesting and processing different parts of a tree into usable materials for boat building and making pine pitch, lashing and birch bark skins.

The event is hosted in collaboration with the Mid-Hudson Woodworkers and the Hudson Valley Furniture Makers.
